West Cluster Sevens

Hockey

GO TAURIKO! There was lots of cheering for the three Tauriko teams. These teams were Tauriko, Tauriko 1 and Tauriko 2. Tauriko was the year 5 team, Tauriko 1 was the year 6 team and Tauriko 2 was the year 5 and 6 team. Boom Clack SCORE and the crowd goes wild. It was a very fun day everybody had a blast. We sadly had 3 injuries one was Wiki where she got whacked in the face with a hockey stick and ball, another one is where Darragh got hit on his temple with a hockey stick and the last one was where Ally’s sore ankle rolled and it really hurt her. Oropi won out of the year 6's and Greenpark won out of the year 5's but Tauriko year 5 team came 2nd!

Netball

For 7’s Netball we were split into 2 teams of 9 people, Tauriko 1 and Tauriko 2. For the 1st game we played against our own school as we had two teams, Tauriko 1 won. It was a hot, sunny day and some people poured water all over themselves. We played Merivale, Pyes Pa, Gate Pa, Greerton and Oropi. Pyes Pa and Merivale tied first. We all think it was a good tournament all together, although we didn’t win, it was still fun.

Rugby

On the 3rd of September 2014 we had West Cluster Sevens rugby. We played at Greerton Marist Rugby Club. After a fail attempt to mould Riley’s mouth guard we played our first game against Pyes Pa. They played dirty and shirt grabbed us. Unfortunately we lost 19-12. Soon we played Gate Pa, which was a pretty good team. We lost 48-31. Next was Greerton Village. We lost 60-12. Next we played Greenpark. We lost 42-7. We lost all of our games but we still had fun.

Soccer
On the 3rd of September 2014 the 7s soccer team organised themselves into cars and departed for Morland Fox Park, where the sun was baking. We arrived and had a briefing. The referees were from Tauranga Intermediate and they went over the rules. The opposing schools where Greerton Village, Greenpark, Gate Pa and Pyes Pa. All three Tauriko teams were first up first. Mrs van Dijk was cheering everyone on. In the end it was was a good fun day with only the year six team getting a place. They got second by only one goal in goal differential. Everyone would like to do it again. Go Tauriko!

Whole School Cross Country 2014

On Wednesday the 28th of May, Tauriko school had whole school cross country at Waipuna park.

We all arrived at school before 8:20, ready to go to cross country. Everyones hearts were pounding and bodies were shivering from the cold. Ding, ding, ding went the bell, we all lined up nervously waiting to get on the bus.

When we arrived at Waipuna Park we found our house coloured flag and sat down with our team mates.
Suddenly Mrs Billington said “could all of the year 1s please make there way over to the starting line’.3, 2, 1 BANG! went the starting gun. The year 1s sprinted off in a second. All you could here was cheering from the sideline for each house colour.

In a split second the year 2s raced off. Most of the year 2s were back in a flash, the first person plunged over the finish line.
The years 3s, 4s, 5s races flew by.
Before you knew it the year 6s had shot off in a hurry, down the hills, around the bends, through the icy cold grass, up the killer hill, over the log and before you knew it they had crossed the finish line. Last but not least the Tall Poppies went to the starting line BANG! off they went.
Once the Tall Poppies had finished we packed up and lined up in our classes and got on the bus.

When we got back to school we had morning tea and watched the parent, teacher, student race. It was so funny to watch Mr Rikiriki give Miss Dravitski a piggy back ride across the line. After that we had a sausage sizzle, the sausages were really hot and a little bit spicy.

WOW! that was a marvelous end to cross country.
The best thing was that everyone cheered each other on and the sausage sizzle. Everyone tried their best and didn't give up even though they wanted to give up.
After that day we all went home tired.

Whole School Swimming Sports

On Thursday the 6th of March it was swimming sports day. I was really excited when we arrived at school, so I got my bag out of the car and nervously walked into class.

All of the competitive swimmers went to go and find their house colour wrist bands, so I put my bag away and went to go and find mine.  I’m in Blue House, the best house, so I got a blue wrist band. Then I went to sit outside with all of the other competitive swimmers. When we got on the bus we all found a seat, then the bus took off to Greerton Pools. When we arrived my heart was pounding really fast, my tummy had gigantic butterflies and my legs started to shake and my fingers started to sweat. While we were walking into Greerton Pools I felt damp and wet and still really nervous about my races. Then Mrs Palfrey said on the loud speaker ‘could everyone please take their seats’, so everyone sat down on the light blue grandstand. I sat up the top with my friends Summer, Olivia and Tessa. Soon after she said ‘all the people in 25 metre freestyle please go and stand by the diving boards’, ‘on your marks, get set, GO!’ shouted Mrs Van Dijk who was in charge of the clappers. I was racing and swimming as fast as possibly could go! Splash, I touched the wall with one hand then had a look around, and the person who was timing me said that I came second place. We all hopped out of the pool and climbed up the slippery grand stand to watch the other races.

It was the parent, teacher and student relay race, so all the school turned up to see this. Mrs Te Whaiti was wearing orange togs, orange swim cap and an orange towel. It was so funny. It was now time to return to school.

It was a really fun day.

PAHOIA SCHOOL TRIATHLON 2014

This is an inter-school event so please encourage your students to give the Pahoia School Triathlon a go and become more active.  This is a great follow on for those kids who trained for and enjoyed the recent Weet-Bix Tryathlon, it also caters for the 5 - 6 year age group.  The Omokoroa Domain is a fantastic venue – bring your school marquee/gazebo and make a family Sunday of it (a great community building event for the beginning of the year).

Rotorua Mini Marathon - – Be part of the 50th Rotorua Marathon Celebrations

Once registered, children receive an official Rotorua Mini Marathon Passport in which they track their progress at completing 40km of running/walking in the build up to the event. They then have the opportunity to complete the final 2.1km of their Marathon on Wednesday 16th April 2014 along the actual Rotorua Marathon Course. There will be Spot Prizes - and all competitors that complete the final 2.1km course on Wednesday 16 April will receive an Official Certificate of completion!

RATS Duathlon

This offroad duathlon event is for Year 3-8 students. Since 2010 we have had an Inter-School Competition where schools compete for a trophy that gets to stay with the winners for a year! Points are based on competitor numbers and placings. Extra points are awarded for place getters in each category, as well as total competitor numbers.  Schools with smaller total entry numbers still have a chance of winning if their children place highly. Children can enter as individuals or as part of a team (2 or 3 per team), but they must all be the same age category. (eg: Yr 3 student cannot team up with a Yr 8)

There will be spot prizes on the day and a Trophy presented to the winning school in both Primary and Intermediate category, also FREE Sausage sizzle for all competitors after their race.

Weet-Bix Tryathlon 2014 - Sunday 23rd February

Aimed at all Kiwi Kids (7-15 year olds) whether you’re a young budding triathlete or just wanting to get active!!

The Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon in Tauranga is located at the beautiful Memorial Park. The event starts with a short swim in the nearby outdoor 25 metre pool. The Transition Area is located outside of the pool complex, on the fields nearby, and the bike and run legs of the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon around the field and surrounding streets.

Whole School Athletics

On Tuesday 19th November (Week 6) we will be holding our Whole School Athletics Day at Tauriko School. The Year 3 – 8 students will be competing from 9am in a range of athletics skills. The year 1 and 2 students will partake in a fun morning of run, jump and throw activities from 9 – 10.20 using the PAC and sounding grass areas of the playground. The whole school will then join together in the afternoon for sprint finals and relays. From our school event we will be choosing our top athletes from Year 5 and 6 in each event to compete at the West Cluster Athletics Day on Thursday 28th of November (Week 7). Hope to see you all there!

TAURIKO SCHOOL- AIMS FOR GOLD!

Last week was an exciting week in the sports history of Tauriko School. It was the first year Tauriko had ever entered the AIMs Games international sporting tournament. However they were certainly not there to just make up the numbers, coming away with four medals in the Gymsports, 2 golds, a silver and a bronze, all in the Twisters division. Gold in the teams and a clean sweep of the overall individual competition. This placed us 25th out of 193 across New Zealand, Australia and The Cook Islands. WOW!

“When Tauriko schools name got called out for the team gold it felt like I was in a dream,” reflects Brooke. “I couldn’t believe it was real but it was. It was such an amazing experience. I had never got a medal before.”

Leah continues by saying “When we won gold I felt like I was dreaming, I never thought I could win gold. Mrs Logan has tried really hard to make us the best and she is always encouraging us and wants us to do our best.”

Charlotte finishes by saying “I felt scared, nervous and shaky but also excited in front of a big audience. I think gymnastics is an exciting sport. I am so proud of the effort by Mrs Logan and our whole team!”

On Thursday for the individuals Leah came 1st, Brooke came 2nd, Keilani came 3rd and Charlotte came 7th! A clean sweep of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd  placings from a small school with a tiny pool of students. It just goes to show that when you train hard and think big, small schools can compete with the biggest of them all.

West Cluster Sevens (Year 5 and 6)

Netball
On  Tuesday the 10th of September I jumped out of bed, put my uniform on, then my sneakers and  hopped out of the house and into the car excitedly!

When we arrived at school I ran into the classroom to meet my team and Coach, Miss O’Reilly.
Miss O’Reilly called the roll and told us all whose car we were travelling in. ‘Paige, Taila, Ellie and Holly  are going with Paiges’ Mum, Stephanie to the Netball Courts’ she said. So we nervously  got in the car and drove to the Courts. When we got to the courts we put our bibs on and got in our positions, I played wing attack, wing attack is when you get the ball and feed it down to the goal attack and goal shoot.

First up we were playing Gate Pa school, then the whistle blew. I was feeling a bit sick but excited. The centre threw the ball to me and I passed it to another player then the whistle blew and my team got a goal. Then the whistle went again and it was the end of the game, so we said “good game” to the other team and huddled up in a circle and said “wahoo, we won our first game”. So we had some morning tea and a big drink of water, my team was a little bit tired.

We got ready for our next game then we did some passes and a game called piggie in the middle. Then it was our second game, I was off. We tied with the other team. Straight after that, we played  another game and we won.

It was now lunchtime, I had yummy Subway. After lunch  it was our last game so my team got together and sorted out what positions we will be, they put me as wing defence because there was a fast little player in wing attack, wing defence is when you defend wing attack  and stop them from getting the ball. ‘Fweeeeeet’ the whistle blew, my team started off to a good start then the whistle went again and Tauriko school WON! At that moment I was so excited.

Also the person who was running the Netball games said that Tauriko A team came first. Miss O'Reilly (my coach) was really excited because she likes coming first.
Our team received a cool certificate!

I had a great time at 7’s Netball and I’m looking forward to next year!

Soccer
Pass, kick and score. On Tuesday the 10th of September the senior school went to the West Cluster Sevens tournament.  There was a range of different sports to choose from but I choose soccer. As the car stopped at Moreland Fox Park I jumped out , I was so excited, I slapped some sunscreen on my face on the bright sunny day. It was 9.54am the horn had gone for the game to start, Tauriko A against Tauriko B. It was a very close game but Tauriko A got the most goals in the net. I remember sitting on the side of the pitch yelling go Tauriko!! All and all it was a great day and Tauriko A ended up being placed second in the Year 6 grade.  We all had fun !!! By Lisa











Basketball (QE11)
Our first game was on court  2 against Pyes Pa. We had a slow start and it took us awhile to warm up but after the 1st 5 minutes we were away and the end score was 6/4 to us. Next we played Merrivale and we won again 4/2. The next team we competed against was Greerton Village. This was a hard game but in the end the score was 10/6 to us.

We had to wait for 40 minutes which felt like a long time. With 16 points on the table we were in the lead but Greenpark was close behind us with 14 points. We had to win the next 3 games to win the competition.

Next we played against Oropi. The final score was 12/0 to us and when we played Gate Pa we had another win. Our final game against Greenpark we had to win against them. It was a close game. Greenpark got a goal but we got a goal quickly after. BUT THEN our defence dropped the ball and we stopped getting goals in. Greenpark came out by winning 6/2. 3rd went to Greerton, 2nd went to Tauriko and I bet you have already guessed who got first.

When we got back to school Tracy our coach bought us all ice creams. We had a great day. Thank you to all the helpers that made this day happen for us and a big well done to the team; Brenden, Lachie, Lucy, Campbell, Josh, Olivia, Mitch, Sean, Reife, Ben and Arohaina.

Rugby
Nine year 5 and 6 boys represented Tauriko at the West Cluster rugby Seven's  tournament.
We played four games and we won two against Greerton Village and lost two to Greenpark the scores against Greerton Village  was 19-21 and then 7-54.
Our coach was Gavin Dyer.  Highlights of the day were beating Greerton Village and being able to spend the whole day playing sport.
Not so good parts of the day were getting punched in the face by another player.
In summary it was an awesome day, enjoyed by all.

Steamers @ Tauriko

What a wonderful opportunity we all had to meet the Steamers at school last week. It was lots of fun and we all learnt how to use our WITS. Read about the game below from a couple of our Year 5 reporters.



24-20 to the steamers!!
From the classes we surveyed that 42 students from the school attended the game and therefore 42 parents went to watch the game on Sunday. The game was at Baypark. 39 students and parents used the free tickets that the Steamers gave us.

There were 6 forms of entertainment at the start of the game. These included: jump jam, dancing and ripper rugby.

At the start of the game one man got hit in the head with a rugby ball and some people tried to start the Mexican wave but sadly it didn’t succeed. At halftime the score was 10-6 to the Hawkes Bay Magpies.

At half time there was an Australian guy who tried coming in without a ticket and there were 7 security guards trying to get him down. There was an tyre race where 2 families had to wheel tyres down the pitch with a big elastic around them. Campbell from Room 11 from our school was in the winning team.

The second half was more intense because the Steamers were more turned on and the Magpies were harder. Half of the second half the Steamers were getting hurt so much but they still had a good run, a lot of fun and played by the rules!! At the end the Steamers won even though Hawkes Bay was in front in the first half.

Best of the Best Gymnastics Competition

Last term on the 28^th of June some gymnasts had qualified to compete in the Best of the Best competition at Argos Gym.
These gymnasts had placed in the top 8 in their year group at the previous gym competitions.
Each female gymnast had a routine on the floor, beam and vault.
The boys did a mat exercise instead of the beam.
Gymnasts were in groups competing against Year 3’s all the way up to Year 8’s in each level. The competitors were from all around the Bay of Plenty.
