Whole School Swimming Sports

Smash! went the clappers. I dived into the pool swimming as hard as I could, no stopping.  It was Monday the 2nd of March and Tauriko School were in action at the Greerton Swimming Pool for the 2015 School Swimming Sports. Yelling, screaming people cheered as the four school houses went head-to-head. Splash, splash the water spun around my head.  Smack!  I crashed into the wall and the woman stopped the timer.  I hopped out of the pool and went back to my seat shivering with elation.
Next to swim was my friend Casey.  Casey looked terrified as she climbed up the starting blocks. The whistle blew, the clapper went and she dived into the water. I  was cheering for her as she sped down the lane, bobbing up and down in a fluid breaststroke motion until she reached the end.  Touching with two hands, she finished her race.  I felt really delighted that Casey had an awesome race. Next race up was backstroke and Jess, Sally and I were in this race. I was so nervous I had butterflies in my stomach. BANG!! the clapper whet. Swimming as fast as I could. Nearly there, nearly there, suddenly I banged my wrist into the wall. With excitement and joy we all hopped out of the pool. I was wondering what place I came.
     

Cross Country Results 2014

Whole School Cross Country 2014

On Wednesday the 28th of May, Tauriko school had whole school cross country at Waipuna park.

We all arrived at school before 8:20, ready to go to cross country. Everyones hearts were pounding and bodies were shivering from the cold. Ding, ding, ding went the bell, we all lined up nervously waiting to get on the bus.

When we arrived at Waipuna Park we found our house coloured flag and sat down with our team mates.
Suddenly Mrs Billington said “could all of the year 1s please make there way over to the starting line’.3, 2, 1 BANG! went the starting gun. The year 1s sprinted off in a second. All you could here was cheering from the sideline for each house colour.

In a split second the year 2s raced off. Most of the year 2s were back in a flash, the first person plunged over the finish line.
The years 3s, 4s, 5s races flew by.
Before you knew it the year 6s had shot off in a hurry, down the hills, around the bends, through the icy cold grass, up the killer hill, over the log and before you knew it they had crossed the finish line. Last but not least the Tall Poppies went to the starting line BANG! off they went.
Once the Tall Poppies had finished we packed up and lined up in our classes and got on the bus.

When we got back to school we had morning tea and watched the parent, teacher, student race. It was so funny to watch Mr Rikiriki give Miss Dravitski a piggy back ride across the line. After that we had a sausage sizzle, the sausages were really hot and a little bit spicy.

WOW! that was a marvelous end to cross country.
The best thing was that everyone cheered each other on and the sausage sizzle. Everyone tried their best and didn't give up even though they wanted to give up.
After that day we all went home tired.

Year 5 and 6 Flippaball

We have this evening completed our final game of flippaball for the term one season. The team was competing against Maungatapu in an A grade final for third and fourth place. Maungatapu beat us in a very tough game earlier in the season 4-2 but we managed to reverse the tables on them with a 6-1 win to take third place in A Grade. This is a fantastic result for a team who epitomised team work. Nicky and I enjoyed being part of such a good team of students.

Whole School Swimming Sports

On Thursday the 6th of March it was swimming sports day. I was really excited when we arrived at school, so I got my bag out of the car and nervously walked into class.

All of the competitive swimmers went to go and find their house colour wrist bands, so I put my bag away and went to go and find mine.  I’m in Blue House, the best house, so I got a blue wrist band. Then I went to sit outside with all of the other competitive swimmers. When we got on the bus we all found a seat, then the bus took off to Greerton Pools. When we arrived my heart was pounding really fast, my tummy had gigantic butterflies and my legs started to shake and my fingers started to sweat. While we were walking into Greerton Pools I felt damp and wet and still really nervous about my races. Then Mrs Palfrey said on the loud speaker ‘could everyone please take their seats’, so everyone sat down on the light blue grandstand. I sat up the top with my friends Summer, Olivia and Tessa. Soon after she said ‘all the people in 25 metre freestyle please go and stand by the diving boards’, ‘on your marks, get set, GO!’ shouted Mrs Van Dijk who was in charge of the clappers. I was racing and swimming as fast as possibly could go! Splash, I touched the wall with one hand then had a look around, and the person who was timing me said that I came second place. We all hopped out of the pool and climbed up the slippery grand stand to watch the other races.

It was the parent, teacher and student relay race, so all the school turned up to see this. Mrs Te Whaiti was wearing orange togs, orange swim cap and an orange towel. It was so funny. It was now time to return to school.

It was a really fun day.

TAURIKO SCHOOL- AIMS FOR GOLD!

Last week was an exciting week in the sports history of Tauriko School. It was the first year Tauriko had ever entered the AIMs Games international sporting tournament. However they were certainly not there to just make up the numbers, coming away with four medals in the Gymsports, 2 golds, a silver and a bronze, all in the Twisters division. Gold in the teams and a clean sweep of the overall individual competition. This placed us 25th out of 193 across New Zealand, Australia and The Cook Islands. WOW!

“When Tauriko schools name got called out for the team gold it felt like I was in a dream,” reflects Brooke. “I couldn’t believe it was real but it was. It was such an amazing experience. I had never got a medal before.”

Leah continues by saying “When we won gold I felt like I was dreaming, I never thought I could win gold. Mrs Logan has tried really hard to make us the best and she is always encouraging us and wants us to do our best.”

Charlotte finishes by saying “I felt scared, nervous and shaky but also excited in front of a big audience. I think gymnastics is an exciting sport. I am so proud of the effort by Mrs Logan and our whole team!”

On Thursday for the individuals Leah came 1st, Brooke came 2nd, Keilani came 3rd and Charlotte came 7th! A clean sweep of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd  placings from a small school with a tiny pool of students. It just goes to show that when you train hard and think big, small schools can compete with the biggest of them all.

Dynamo Day

As part of our Leadership Week in the last week of Term 2, we celebrated our Dynamo leaders by giving them an opportunity to run some games with classes in school time and what a fantastic job the Dynamos did! 

I was so incredibly proud of them - it is not always an easy task and pulling everything together is a regular challenge which they all take on with passion and pride. Today was an awesome opportunity for our Dynamo Leaders to be recognised for what they do and to have some fun with classes as well. 

Our Dynamos are going strong and it is the end of Term 2 - keep up the great effort. 

Go DYNAMOS! I love working with you guys!

Flippa Ball

In Term 1, eight Tauriko School students played a season of flippa ball. These eight students were Madison, Anna, Olivia, Brooklyn, Emma, Hannah, Holly.B and Nikki. There were two Tauriko School teams who played this season. We were in the Tauriko Typhoons the year 6 team. One of our best games was when we won 6-0. In this game we all played in our strongest positions and it turned out great. We think we all played together as a team and and it all paid off and got us 2nd over all. Pillans Point came first and we hope to beat them next season. We thank our coach (Robyn) our manager (Lesley) and our parents for bringing us to every game. We couldn't have done it without them.

Whole School Swimming Sports

What an awesome day we had on Thursday 7th March at the Greerton Pool. It was great to see so many of the school community there to support their tamariki and get involved. Thank you so much to all the parents who helped in some way on the day. Without your help the day wouldn't have been such a great success. It was so neat to see so many of the students giving things ago and having lots of fun. Congratulations to all our swimmers on the day you did yourselves proud. Athletics Results 2012

WEST CLUSTER SEVENS (YEAR 5 AND 6)

On Thursday 6th September the whole Year 5 and 6 syndicate set off to their different sporting venues to compete in their different sporting codes.

Hockey
Tauriko School entered two hockey teams into the West Cluster 7s.  All hockey games were held at Boys College. Both teams played Green park, Oropi, Gate Pa and Greerton Village.  The year 6 team won to Oropi and to Greerton village, they lost to Green park and drew against Gate Pa.  The year 5 team won to Gate Pa and lost to Green park.   Everyone had an amazing time and tried their  hardest, both teams ended up coming  2nd  overall. We would like to say a huge thank you to Steve Moore and Trevor Smith for their coaching tips. Netball
Tauriko School entered two netball teams into the West Cluster 7s tournament. All netball games were held at the Greerton Marist sports grounds. Each team played  five games. All players tried their hardest and had a good time. The year 5 team came 10th overall and the year 6 team came 6th overall. We were up against some hard players but we all played as a team and enjoyed the experience. By Lucy

Soccer 
Seven’s soccer was played at Moreland Fox park - we had three teams competing and we all had lots of fun. Two teams came fourth and the other one didn’t do so well, but they tried their best. The best part was scoring goals and the sportsmanship. Some of our team members had never played before this tournament and others play for the Blue Rovers on Saturdays. Thanks so much to Rob and Rachael Taylor who spent so much of their time coaching us before the tournament.

TALL POPPY HOCKEY

Our year 7/8 girls have been lucky enough to combine with Oropi School to make an 11 aside girls’ hockey team for the Intermediate Quicksticks Tournament. Our name is OT Hotstix and our team colour is pink. We entered in the Girls’ Reserve Grade, and came top of the table in the opening tournament!

Since then we have had a win, a draw and a loss, but the girls look like they are hitting their stride now, and I know we are going to see some fantastic hockey from them in our upcoming games.

 I would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing coach from Oropi School, Stretch who certainly knows how to get the best out of the girls. A special mention needs to go to Mike Loveland, who was able to secure $600 worth of sponsorship from Spicers Paper towards our gorgeous new hockey shirts. Thank you Spicers Paper and to Mike for organising this! Our girls look amazing.

Year 3 and 4 Gymsports competition

In the year 3 and 4 Springers girls section Gemma Taylor came 3rd overall and Cristina McCormick came 5th overall.

The girls Springers team of Gemma Taylor, Cristina McCormick, Hailey Paprzik, Amy Campbell and Jenny Mackinnon came first overall. An amazing effort from out of 150 girls!

The year 3 and 4 springers boys also had an amazing competition finishing 3rd team overall. Great effort from Jack Unsworth, Jayden Lintoff, Stan Tucker and Ryan Bowles.

Congratulations to them all. We would like to say a huge thank you to Maree Logan our schools Gymnastics co-ordinator who has done an amazing job at training these students for the past two terms. They couldn’t have done it without you.
